The Wheel of Sharp Weapons

The Wheel of Sharp Weapons is one of my most favorite mind training texts ever.

The first time I heard about this text, was when Venerable Thubten Chodron recounted the first time she read The Wheel of Sharp Weapons. It was in the 1970′s and she was in Nepal attending a buddhist course at Kopan Monastery. At the time she wasn’t a nun yet, and had contracted some sort of disease that drove up a burning fever with horrendous intestinal problems. She was bedridden, with nothing else to do but read.

What she read was the Wheel of Sharp Weapons, and it had a profound effect on turning her mind towards the dharma. Continue reading »

His Holines the Dalai Lama was in Ireland in April during his European tour, and he talked about forgiveness at the University of Limerick. Even though the topic is about forgiveness, a lot of this topic is also about acceptance. Accepting people of diffferent backgrounds, religious faiths, etc

I find it so interesting that everyone came to see him speak, yet he decided to stand while everyone else sat the whole time. At the end is also a sweet song on forgiveness that is performed by a local children’s group.

Deb of Dhamma Matters recently put up a nice meditation practice for developing love and compassion, by his Holiness the Dalai Lama. It’s very easy to do, doesn’t require much time, but the benefit for your own personal happiness and for the happiness of others is boundless.

HH Dalai Lama plans on retiring from politics

He’s been saying it for years that he would eventually retire, but it’s going to be a complete shock for many that the time has finally come.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama announced that he will be making a request to the Tibetan parliament in exile to change the constitution so he can step down, and it’ll probably be approved within a couple of days. Continue reading »

This is one of my favorite buddhist documentaries of all time.

It involves Tenzin Zopa (now Geshe Zopa, the spiritual center director of Lozang Dragpa Center, Malaysia), the attendent and pupil of Lama Konchog. Lama Konchog was a well known teacher and yogi who used to meditate in caves for years, engaging in very strict ascetic practices like not eating any food and drinking only water, and not sleeping so he could meditate day and night to attain enlightenment. This video is from a talk that His Holiness gave at Emory University. Even though its titled an Introduction to Buddhism, I feel that very little of what His Holiness the Dalai Lama talks about is an intro. It’s not that everything is so complicated, even though His Holiness is very erudite. Lot of the simplest ideas, for me, are often the hardest to implement and to try to get a feel for in daily life.

This talk gives some basics about buddhism and some advice that anyone can bring into their daily life as practice instruction.

His Holiness The Dalai Lama will be coming to France 2011

His Holiness the Dalai Lama will be teaching in Toulouse, France on August 13-15, 2001. HH Dalai Lama will be giving a talk on Shantarakshita’s Ornament for the Middle Way.

Shantarakshita was known for bringing together the traditions of the the Madyamika tradition of Nagarjuna with the Yogacara tradition of Asanga, becoming the Yogacara-Svatantrika Madyamika. He was also an abbot of the great Indian Buddhist Monastic University Nalanda, and his work represents the last great development of Buddhist philosophy in India.

If you’re in France during this time, maybe this is a good time to sign up as a volunteer. I’ve never personally met HH Dalai Lama, but I think if I did, it would either happen if I went to India during a smaller teaching or if I was a volunteer and got a brief moment to make an offering.

UPDATE (06-19-2011). Lama Zopa recently had a mild stroke and is recovering every day. All his teachings for 2011 have been canceled until further notice.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama will be giving public teaching as well as the Kalachakra intiation this year in Washington DC, during the days of July 6 – 16 2011. His Holiness doesn’t often given initiations to a tantra of the highest class often in the US, so it’ll be a precious opportunity and very auspicious as well. The Kalachakra is often given to large groups, even to non-buddhists as a blessing for world peace, and there is no better place to spread this vision of world peace then the capital of a political super power.

Following the initiation, Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche announced that he’ll be in Washington DC on July 17 2011. Continue reading »
